Energy: Nuclear Power Plant Training & Documentation
Generic Fundamentals (GF) Training Material Descriptions
GP’s Generic Fundamentals (GF) training materials parallel NRC Generic Fundamentals Examination (GFE)
categories to prepare the student thoroughly for taking the Examination. The links below
will take you directly to training materials descriptions:
Gain new knowledge in the operation of plant components.
GP’s Components GF training materials help prepare nuclear power plant licensed operators
wishing to take the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Generic Fundamentals
Examination. These training materials address the theory, physical construction,
and operation of different types of components. It includes simplified drawings of the components
for added clarity. Sample questions and problems are included to assist in the learning
process.
Components chapters are:
- Valves
- Pumps
- Heat exchangers
- Demineralizers & Ion exchangers
- Motors & Generators
- Breakers, Disconnects, & Relays
- Sensors & Detectors
- Controllers & Positioners
Recommended audience
These training materials are designed for reactor operators and senior reactor operators
preparing for the NRC Generic Fundamentals Examination. It is also
appropriate for:
- Shift technical advisors
- Plant engineers
- Plant managers
- Operations personnel responsible for the operation and control of plant
equipment and systems
- Training personnel responsible for providing training on plant equipment and systems
- Personnel who staff the Technical Support Center (TSC) and Emergency Offsite Facility (EOF)
Benefits
GP’s Components GF training materials give participants new
skills and knowledge they can use to take the NRC GF Examination
required for the licensing of nuclear plant operators. The student can also use
the skills and knowledge gained in this course to operate and improve the efficiency
of the system equipment and components they operate.
Class duration
The Component portion of the GF training materials typically is covered in 2-3
weeks, depending on the students experience and background

Prepare for the reactor theory portion of the GFE.
GP’s Reactor Theory GF training materials provide an explanation
in the principles of reactor theory, including basic nuclear structure and components,
production and removal of neutrons, reactor fuels, fission products , reactor startup, operation, and shutdown. Providing a background in the safe operation
of the reactor plant and components ensures that the participants receive a thorough
understanding of safe nuclear plant operation before learning site-specific systems
and operations procedures.
The GF training materials graphics show atomic structure, neutron and fuel life
cycles, production and removal of fission product poisons, and coefficients affecting
reactor power and operation. Sample questions and problems are included to assist
in the learning process.
Reactor Theory chapters are:
- Neutron and nuclear properties
- Neutron lifecycle, production and losses
- Reactor kinetics and neutron sources
- Reactivity coefficients
- Control rod design and operation
- Fission product poisons production and removal
- Fuel depletion and burnable poisons
- Reactor operational physics

Learn about heat transfer, fluid flow, and thermodynamics.
GP’s Thermodynamics GF training materials provide explanations
of the theories of energy equation balances, as well as solving problems using steam
tables and Mollier diagrams, Carnot and
Rankine cycles, Bernoulli’s Equation, pump laws,
heat transfer equations, pool boiling curves, and fracture mechanics. Each chapter
includes a detailed discussion of the application of these theories for the safe
operation of the plant components and systems. Sample questions and problems are
included to assist in the learning process.
Thermodynamics chapters are:
- Properties and units
- Energy forms and balances
- Steam production and uses
- Thermodynamic processes
- Thermodynamic cycles
- Fluid static and dynamic operation
- Heat transfer and heat exchangers
- Thermal hydraulic principles
- Thermal hydraulic limitations
- Brittle fracture, stress, and strain
Recommended audience
These training materials are designed for reactor operators and senior reactor operators
preparing for the NRC Generic Fundamentals Examination. The following
nuclear plant employees will also benefit from receiving a better understanding
of the basics principles of thermodynamic theories:
- Shift technical advisors
- Plant engineers
- Plant managers
- Operations personnel responsible for the operation and control of plant
equipment and systems
- Training personnel responsible for providing training on plant equipment and systems

Verify the knowledge gained from training by reviewing the Examination Study Guide.
GP’s NRC Examination Bank Study Guide, a complement to the GP course, provides students with a detailed
explanation of every one of the over 2,500 questions published by the NRC in both the
PWR and BWR GF Examination banks as of December 2007.
As you are most likely aware, 80% of the questions on each examination are drawn
directly from the NRC bank, 10% are modified questions from the bank, and the remaining
10% are new questions not previously published. With a required passing grade
of 80%, it is essential that students become familiar with the style, scope,
and specifics of the NRC Examination bank. The GP Examination Study Guide
explains why each correct answer is correct, the thought process that reaches that
conclusion, and why each of the distracters can be discounted. In addition, test
taking tips and techniques are included as appropriate.
The NRC Examination Bank Study Guide is NOT meant as
a substitute for the course material, but is a great tool to assist your students
in application of the knowledge taught therein.
